The cycle of violence starts when someone kills someone, another person will seek revenge and the cycle starts like that. Another person that was in the victim's family will kill the person that took the revenge and this will keep happening. This is the cycle.
In the book Monster, Steve throws a rock and it accidentally hits someone's girlfriend. The boyfriend got upset and retaliated by punching Steve's friend, who he believes threw the rock in the first place. The cycle ends there because Steve's friend doesn't retaliate.
In The Interrupters, there was supposed to be a meeting, but a fight broke out. Everyone hoes outside and a guy gets his tooth knocked out during the fight. His sister was there with a knife and a brick and went after the guy that knocked her brother's tooth out. The Interrupters went in and acted as mediators to help end the conflict before it continued to escalate.
In Harper High, the cycle of violence keeps pushing students to respond to each others' actions with increasing intensity. As a result many students in the community don't feel safe. One gang that develops talks about their origins coming from having the leader of the gang gunned down by another gang.
How does this show up in "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst"?
In "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst," Dave (a character from the song) was killed and then Dave's brother kills the killer, and then Dave's brother gets killed, too. And the cycle continues. During the skit at the end of the song, Dave's brother's friends are heard discussing a plan for retaliation.
