Gang fights may erupt from minor quarrels that grew into huge problems. These small triggers are known as petty grievances. Petty grievances are something of little importance, but they have the potential to spark massive. blow outs. When petty grievances are blown out of proportion in this way, it is known as escalation of the situation. Petty grievances tie into rule number six of the Harper High Guide to Survival: You can be shot for reasons big and small.
One example of a small conflict that escalated into a deadly situation can be found in the New York Times article entitled, "A Drumbeat of Multiple Shootings but America Isn't Listening." In this article, we read about a man who was accused of taking another man's watch, a watch that he had just found. The accuser proceeds to pull out a semiautomatic gun and shoot the man who he claims stole his watch. He also shot four innocent bystanders who were not at all involved in the situation. This is one example of a small conflict that escalated into a bigger problem.
Small things may bother some people so much because they may have anger issues or they really take everything to heart. These people are easily offended whenever they are told something they don't want to hear. Minor slights are viewed as "disrespect," and must be dealt with violently in order to reaffirm the perpetrator's dominance and maintain his public reputation. This is how small things can escalate to injury or even death.
