![]() People need protection from the police and gangs. Some people do not really trust the police because to some, they don't do anything to help them with their problems. Sometimes they even make them worse, especially if it involves something illegal. For example, in Harper High, when they asked the kids that were in gangs why they didn't ask for help from the police or the school officials, they said these officials would just get in the way of everything. If these officials got involved in their problems, the gang members would probably run into more problems. They could even face legal consequences. This is why many gang members are hesitant to seek help from police. Mistrusting the police contributes to the cycle of violence because since people don't think that the police are doing anything they decide to do something about it themselves and if this something is illegal then things get worse. Then this leads to the cycle of violence because maybe the problem has to do with some kind of killing or something like drugs and someone does something about it like killing a person then it repeats over and over again. Harper High This connects to the 2nd Rule to Live By in Harper High because the rule is don't walk by yourself. If you want to feel protected then you wouldn't want to be walking by yourself. When you walk with others you have people who've got your back. You also run the risk of being thought a gang member. Source: Rubble Kings, This American Life: Harper High Pt. 1 Contributors:Victor,Ronnie,Caresse According to one New York Times article, protection is a common reason for people to join gangs. Unfortunately, "they are more at risk." Street violence is self-perpetuating that way: Shootings beget shootings that beget more gunmen. Professor Papachristos, the gang expert, said the more violent the neighborhood, the more teenagers and young men seek safety in numbers. |
