In "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst" Kendrick Lamar has conversations with people from his life. They talk about the different ways that violence shows up in their lives. One common theme among them is the feeling that they cannot change, each bad choice they make makes them more and more of a bad person.
Guilt weighs heavy on people, and makes the possibility of change seem impossible. This internalized feeling of badness comes with guilt and stays with you. Kendrick Lamar calls this feeling "thirst." In his song, he says that the people who make negative choices feel thirsty. This is a metaphor for their desire to make better choices. They need water, they need more positivity to help quench their thirst.
Steve Harmon had a similar feeling of thirst in Monster. During the beginning of the book, he seriously doubted himself as a good person, and wanted to reduce himself to all of his negative choices. However, with the help of his lawyer, family, and favorite teacher, he realized that he wasn't a monster.
